After a magnificent Opening Ceremony the GB Team kicked-off their competition schedule with their divisioning events on Sunday 14 September.

Here is a summary of the performances of our Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton and Artistic Gymnastics squads on Day 1. Below you will also find videos of our athletes and their impressions about the Opening Ceremony and the European Summer Games so far!

Our aquatics squad made of 11 strong swimmers had their divisioning races on Sunday. Head Coach , Janet Warrington, explained:

“Dylan Thorburn had a brilliant day. In the morning he smashed his entry time with a six seconds personal best and his performance in his backstroke event was excellent executing the turn perfectly, which he had been working on hard in training.

Kieran Neary was the only other athlete to better his entry time, which was in the 100 Freestyle. After the start Kieran was in 3rd place, at the first turn he was 2nd gradually pulling away to finally win the heat by a clear 15 metres.  Adam Meanwell was pleased with his performance and looking forward to the final on Tuesday.

Natalie Moon and Scott Cleaver had solid performances in the 400m Freestyle and are looking forward to the final tomorrow afternoon along with the 50 Freestyle finals for Emma Birley, Jacqueline Minchin, Maria Orsi, Dylan Thorburn and Sam Pattinson. A very busy and long first day but everyone is looking forward to our second day of competitions.”

Fleur with her parents

Head coach, Lesley Andrews, said: “Niall Finlayson couldn’t wait to get on the track, he ran his personal best in the 200m while Fleur O’ Donohue ran 100m today.  As with the other girls, a second down on entered time, but I am sure that will change in the finals. Jennifer Power ran 400m and Linzi Finnigan ran well, only a second down on her entered time. Alicia Bradshaw also did well on her 100m. Gary Starkey Gary did not have events today, but looking forward  to day 2. Edward Williams did the long jump today and was only a couple of centimetres down on his entered distance. Last but not least, Nicholas Mann ran 200m  in a very good time of 40 seconds.”

Head Coach David Gillespies, shared: “We have divisioning today and all the badminton athletes performed well. Samantha Monk and Mark Goulder returned ratings exactly as submitted.  Catherine Carson and Kerry Duncan went up by 0.5 – I’m happy with this results and I believe  is due to the extra training done in the host town in Antwerp.”

Gymnast with her coaches

Head Coach Yana Vibert explained: “All the gymnasts had podium training today, so they all had a practice on all the apparatus which went really well with everyone completing routines successfully. Tomorrow the level 2, 3, and 4 male gymnasts all get to compete in their divisioning.  It was great to see so many of our parents ready to watch their athletes today."
