CEO Michelle Carney Blog Post

8th November 2018

It’s been a whirlwind of a first 3 months in post! I feel very blessed and privileged to have landed this great role and it hasn’t disappointed. It was an amazing induction to have been able to attend the Anniversary Games in Stirling during my second week in post – and meet many of our athletes, volunteers, officials and families.

I’ve been very lucky to visit our global HQ in Washington DC to meet many of the international team and learn from other CEOs across the globe.  I’ve also spent time with our global CEO, Europe/Eurasia President and the European team to strengthen our position here in GB.

It has also been a great honour to spend time with some of our inspiring athlete leaders, who are absolutely the future of SOGB.  We landed on the front page of the London Evening Standard, in Hello magazine and on SKY News with Nicole Scherzinger who represented us so wonderfully at the recent BGC Charity Day. It was a huge thrill to be able to eventually announce Liverpool as the host city for the National Summer Games 2021! The commitment shown from Liverpool is incredible and I have no doubt it will be an amazing games.

Our priority is to stabilize the organisation for long term success, and therefore I have spent a lot of time working with the Board and team to build strong foundations, and have been meeting with many of our partners – all of who are crucial in ensuring our longer term success and financial stability.

The next few months will be focussed on financial stability and we will be hitting the road visiting each region across GB, to understand how we can all work together to strengthen and grow the movement.  All ideas are welcome!

Thanks for making me feel so welcome in this wonderful Special Olympics family J
