Kerry Group announces partnership and volunteer support for Special Olympics GB’s 40th Anniversary Games in Stirling

20th July 2018

Swiftly on the back of Kerry Group announcing a two-year partnership with Special Olympics recently, the world’s largest Taste and Nutrition company has just added a new deal to support Special Olympics GB’s 40th Anniversary Games in Stirling in August this year.

Harnessing their spirit of opportunity and community, Kerry’s support at the Special Olympics GB Anniversary Games will see 45 Kerry employees volunteering at the Games.

Kerry Foods will also be providing Fridge Raiders, Cheestrings and Yollies for the 1,400 athletes.

Special Olympics GB’s Anniversary Games will celebrate 40 years of competition and training for athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities in England, Scotland and Wales.

The event will also pay tribute to 50 years of Special Olympics – founded in 1968 in the USA by Eunice Kennedy Shriver – sister of President John F Kennedy.

The SOGB 40th Anniversary Games will be hosted by Special Olympics Scotland in Stirling and is being supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.

The Games are expected to welcome over 1,400 Special Olympics athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities, plus officials and also attract over 4,000 spectators from the UK and also across the World.

Competitors range across age groups, competing in ten sports, including boccia, badminton, indoor bowls, cycling, football, golf, table tennis, swimming, MATP and athletics.

The events will take place at the University of Stirling, whilst golf and indoor bowls will be held at Callander Golf Club and Stirling Indoor Bowling Club respectively.

The games will include an Olympic style opening ceremony which we will celebrate the culture of Special Olympics GB and also the Games host country of Scotland, with a superb line up of entertainment.

Kerry’s wide ranging partnership with Special Olympics focuses on three areas; employee volunteering, employee fundraising and support for Special Olympics’ athlete leadership programme.

The partnership will initially involve Kerry employees from Ireland,  Great Britain,  Netherlands and Poland, with Kerry employees from across the globe having opportunities to get involved in supporting Special Olympics.

Commenting on the announcement, Edmond Scanlon, CEO of Kerry Group, said: “As the world’s largest Taste and Nutrition company and a major consumer foods organisation, we are thrilled to extend our support to Special Olympics GB’s 40th Anniversary Games in Stirling this August.

“We are committed to supporting the local communities in which we operate. Special Olympics has been working in the community supporting people with an intellectual disability for nearly 50 years globally and 40 years in Great Britain.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to further our relationship and work closely with Special Olympics GB and the 1,400 Special Olympics GB athletes and their families, coaches and volunteers at the SOGB Anniversary Games.

“It is an organisation that has successfully opened the hearts and minds of the world to people with intellectual disabilities and created inclusive communities all over the world, and we look forward to working with them in several areas of our business over the next two years.”
