Knowsley Archives Special Olympics project - Thursday 16th August.
Did you or a family/ friend attend the Special Olympics Games in Kirkby in 1982 and fancy attending a commemorative event?
Knowsley Archives are putting on a day of activities to celebrate the Special Olympics Games in Kirkby in 1982 and are inviting all those who attended to commemorate these historical events and celebrate achievements.
The event will involve:
- An exhibition in Kirkby Library about the Special Olympics that will display a variety of the memorabilia, including photos, programmes, medals and even a tracksuit!
- An opportunity for people to bring along more memorabilia on the day;
- Interviews with participants and their families about their experiences;
- A musical performance by Reflections – a singing group formed in 1972 of people from the Adult Disability Service, who sang for the opening event of the Leicester Special Olympics games in 1989.
The event is planned for Thursday 16th August and will start in Kirkby Library at 1.30pm for the official unveiling of the exhibition, a performance by Reflections, story sharing and filmed interviews
A sporting activity is also being held on Wednesday 15th August Kirkby at 3.00pm in Kirkby Leisure Centre for past participants and current users of Knowsley’s Adult Disability Service.
