14th June 2017
The footballing home of legendary figures Sir Stanley Matthews and Gordon Banks will inspire around 80 young footballers from local schools with and without intellectual (learning) disabilities in the Staffordshire area today (Wednesday 14th June 2017).
The young athletes will be participating in this showcase Special Olympics GB Unified Football Tournament which will take place at Stoke City FC’s Dome on Sir Stanley Matthews Way.
This Unified Football event is part of a three year project with support and association with Thierry Henry’s One4All Foundation.
The goal of this event is to encourage more young people, with and without intellectual disabilities, to play ‘Unified football’ and in doing so promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
Karen Wallin, Special Olympics GB CEO, said: “Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
“It is inspired by a simple principle that training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship, inclusion and understanding.
“Special Olympics and Thierry Henry’s One4All Foundation – together with Youth Sport Trust - want to encourage mainstream and specialist schools to better work together to break down barriers for those with intellectual disabilities.
“Tackling self-confidence issues – a significant barrier to employment - and improving leadership skills are central aims.
“Unified Football is a key emphasis of the Play Unified campaign where young people with and without intellectual disabilities train and play sport together as equals.
“By confronting these existing issues in education, communities and the workplace can we truly create a unified generation.”
