#TeamSOGB Updates from our Coaches - Day 6 Competition

Golf Report by Jamie McDonald
Fabulous day at the golf. The players from SOGB Golf or the medal tally ticking over with holds from Andrew Stuart & Rob Holden - silver for William Cottrell, bronzes for Caitlin Todd's, Bill Fairweather Nicholas Silver and Mark Rhodes, while Warren Clark came in fourth. We cannot thank our band of caddies & friends we made at the club enough for really looking after our guys & for putting up with Frank & me. Great memories of a fabulous trip & competition.

Athletics Report by Karen Robertson
Final day at the track was a hectic one with all but two of the squad competing. The day started early with Hetty Bartlett in the long jump. Hetty jumped well and improved her jump from divisioning. Hetty finished in this competition in 4th place by jumping 4.25 which is very close to her pb jump. Hetty adds the 4th place ribbon to her gold for 200m earlier in the week. Next we had Margaret in her 800 meter final. Margaret started well and was not put off her race by her Chinese competitor switching into her lane in front of her. Margaret kept going strong and ran a new pb of 2.41.93 and collecting  the gold medal for her efforts. This race was quickly followed by GB back to the field events with Rosa in the Long Jump. Rosa unfortunately received a fault for her first jump but her second jump of 1.66 was enough to give her a new pb and a second gold medal to add to her collection from these games. Final track event before the team relay in the afternoon was Alexander's 800m final. The race started off extremely fast and Alexander kept in with his competitors competing for top positions. Unfortunately in the second 400m the race spread out and the top three began to pull away. Alexander continued to run strong and finished the race in 5th.
The afternoon brought bags of drama for the athletics squad and was really down to the wire. Our relay team was due to be running at 5.38 but unfortunately team member Adam who had been suffering flu during the week was taken to hospital by the track medical staff. The remaining team members were left with the tough decision of pulling the team, replacing Adam or taking the gamble and waiting to see if he could run. They decided to stick together as a team unit and take the gamble which paid off. Adam was given the all clear in the hospital and returned to the track in record time. Adam ran from the taxi to the start line and the team were ready for their final run of the games. Each member ran with determination. Running in the second fastest of the men's divisions with a mixed team, GB got themselves a 4th place ribbon missing out on the bronze by less than a second. GB ran 2.6 second faster than their qualifying time.
 Grand total for the Athletics squad is;
 Gold 4
Silver 1
Bronze 3
4th 1
5th 5
7th 1
8th 1
Relay 4th
What a superb week for SOGB athletics. Proud Coaches.

Basketball (Men’s) Report by Simon Jackson-Turner
Team GB vs USA - The Final
The Team GB athletes were so excited, nervous and happy to be in the final with the creators of basketball - Team USA. We had previously played Team USA earlier this week and scraped a win against them with a two point lead.We knew that this would be a difficult final. Team GB started strong in the first quarter, but towards the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter we trailed by 5 points to USA. We called a time out and did all that we could to amp the athletes up and make them hungry for the ball and hungry for the win. During the start of the second half Team GB took back control of the game and Tommy Davies and Myles Sanderson became a lethal combination in offence. We ended the game beating USA 26-20.
It was an amazingly close game and we are so proud of all of the Team GB athletes and are so grateful to the families and supporters in the crowd cheering us on.
Team USA are an amazing team and we were honoured to play them in the final.
This marks back to back Gold Medals for Team GB for basketball at the World Summer Games.

Swimming Report by Emma Inglis
Final day at the pool and we had Caleb swimming in the 100m breaststroke, he did a fantastic swim and knocked half a second off his PB and came in 5th.
It was also Erin’s 19th birthday and she was excited to spend the day in Abu Dhabi, her birthday was made extra special by having the opportunity to meet Nicole Shertzinger (spelt wrong I know) - Erin was extremely overwhelmed and had a fantastic day

Bocce Report by Ling Mann
David and Zoe, we tried our best, had fun dancing and prancing on court while waiting for the royalty to come. The score was 8-8 the buzzer had gone , the final ball was thrown by the other team rolling right up to the pallina, boom they had won.
Finally 4th place.
We’ve had an amazing experience.
