SPECIAL OLYMPICS GB ARE RECRUITING

Special Olympics GB has several roles on offer including a new Chair of the Board, a Chief Operating OfficerHead of Finance & Operations and Head of Sport & Competition.   Please see below for further details.  

CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Special Olympics is the largest provider of year-round, all-ability, sports programme in Great Britain and supports over 7,000 athletes with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) on a continued basis.

We are currently seeking a committed, dynamic and inclusive new Chair of the Board who shares a mutual passion for the work of our life-changing organisation.  The Chair will be able to set the vision, lead and motivate, alongside the CEO and Board Members. 

The Chair will take part in building and developing the Board, the organisation and overseeing our 5-year strategy. The Chair will be able to recruit new Board members in line with the skillset we require to achieve the organisation’s aspirations.

The Chair will maintain oversight of the Board and organisation through regular communications with the CEO, with the Board, and where necessary the global organisation.  Working alongside the CEO, the Chair will develop a sustainable and growing operating platform (including income), greater reach to more people with intellectual disabilities and a higher profile and awareness amongst partners and the general public. 

Some travel will be required in and around the UK and Board meetings are held in the head office in London on a quarterly basis. Regular competitions are held all over the country, encouraging all trustees to participate and feel first-hand the impact of the organisation. The role will require attendance at high profile engagements, with many speaking opportunities throughout the year, particularly with the fast approaching Liverpool National Games 2021. Time commitment will therefore vary per candidate, generally 4-6 days per month. 

The Chair will be a public figure for the organisation, strengthening relationships with people, companies and partners, governments and our athletes. It is crucial that though the Chair may not have experience in a similar field, he/she is invested in Special Olympics and what it stands for. The role would suit a candidate that has an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee.

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Special Olympics Great Britain is seeking a highly motivated collaborative individual who will have overall responsibility for all Special Olympics GB’s corporate services including all aspects of the finance function; HR; corporate planning, risk management, management information and IT systems; governance activities; legal function; and facilities management.  

As COO, you will lead on the development and delivery of Special Olympics GB’s strategic objectives and deputise for the CEO where required.  You will be responsible for a high performing team and ensure services are offered to the highest standard and that the organisation runs smoothly, efficiently and economically. 

Experience at COO level previously or a relevant role is required.  You must be an organised, problem-solving, inspirational people person, with business acumen who thrives in a busy, dynamic environment and can move seamlessly between a wide range of people while demonstrating knowledge and expertise in a large variety of subjects.    You will have excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills including the ability to present in public.

HEAD OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS

We are looking for an inspirational and motivational team player to take overall responsibility for all Special Olympics GB's corporate services.  You will have a wide base of knowledge and experience with a proven track record in senior finance and resource management within a comparable organisation and must be able to demonstrate an ability to work both individually and as a team player.  

Working to the COO, your role will include all aspects of Finance, Business Planning, HR management, IT, Charity Governance, Legal and Facilities.  And as a key member of the Leadership Team, you will have a real opportunity to play an important part in shaping the organisation, driving it forward and actively support, develop and implement the strategic plan in accordance with the stated mission.

HEAD OF SPORT & COMPETITION 

We are looking for a new Head of Sport & Competition, who will have lead responsibility for the development and delivery of Special Olympics GB’s objectives relating to sport & competition.

Working to the COO, this crucial role will be instrumental in developing a high quality and fit for purpose sport and competition framework in the UK while at the same time representing Special Olympics Great Britain internationally, advising and supporting the development of sports and competitions at a global level. 

You will lead and manage a high performing team to drive through impact and change with an ability to form impactful relationships and partnerships across a variety of partners.   You will lead on safeguarding and developing & delivering policies and procedures in line with charity legislation and governance, while managing budgets, contracts and reporting systems.   As a member of the Leadership Team, working alongside other Heads of department to play an important part in shaping the organisation.

A love and knowledge of sport goes without saying and you must have a proven track record in growing and developing high performing sports development teams, building strategic relationships at a high level and be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all aspects of safeguarding and management 

You must be hard-working, collaborative, analytical with excellent communication skills with the ability to inspire, lead and work individually but also as a team player who can think on their feet and deal with a wide range of people. 

For the right person with a wealth of experience at a senior strategic programme management level, this is an amazing opportunity to lead the development and delivery of a fundamental role of Special Olympics GB.
