Having provided £17,500 to support the delivery of 35 competitions in 2023, the Event Support Grant has returned and is now open for applications.

Following feedback from Special Olympics Great Britain members about expanding the number of competitive opportunities for athletes, accredited programmes are invited to apply for a grant, which supports event running costs.

Applications should be made before 9am on Tuesday 30th April 2024 and please do note that there is a limited number of events that the grants can support.

Rachael Crack, Special Olympics GB Competition Development Manager, said: “More than 60 events were delivered across England, Scotland and Wales in 2023, and it was great that we could provide support for more than half of these competitions to make the experience even stronger for our athletes.

“We’re keen to expand on this throughout 2024 and give our athletes more opportunities to compete and make more friendships with athletes in other clubs and regions.

“However, in addition to Event Support Grant funding, we want to provide more support, guidance and learn more about how we make the Special Olympics GB competition programme as strong as possible.”

Special Olympics GB has recently created sport specific competition development meetings, which are initially focused on athletics, badminton, basketball, football and swimming, with plans to expand to other sports in time.

These meetings bring together key members of the membership and National Office staff to consider best practice event operations, identify potential improvements and learn more about the expectations that athletes have of competition.
