Special Olympics Great Britain has appointed June Whitehead as its new Network Development Manager (Clubs) in a role that’s designed to help its 95 accredited clubs across England, Scotland and Wales thrive.

June has previously held roles in club development with England Athletics whilst she also boasts experience in fundraising, coaching and coach development. She has been appointed in the role that was previously held by Emma Kane-McGuigan, who was recently named Head of Network, in a newly created Special Olympics GB role following a competitive interview process.

Emma Kane-McGuigan said: “June is very much aware of the challenges that grassroots sports clubs face, having experienced eight years in regional and national positions with English Athletics, where she helped multiple clubs thrive.
“With such extensive experience of grassroots sport, we believe that she will give excellent support to our clubs and we look forward to introducing her to our network in the coming weeks.”

In addition to her strong background in club development, June runs Helsby Running Club, as a volunteer, which is an inclusive running club that supports several Special Olympics GB athletes.

June Whitehead said: “It’s a very exciting time to join Special Olympics GB with the organisation having such strong ambitions to expand its network, which will enable more people with intellectual disabilities benefit from its sporting opportunities.

“Having spent the vast majority of my career in sport, the happiest moments have been spent supporting grassroots clubs and watching them grow. I’m looking forward to working with the many Special Olympics GB clubs across the country and helping them continue to thrive.”

Special Olympics GB’s accredited clubs are supported across the country by more than 3,800 selfless volunteers who are creating sporting opportunities for its 6,600 registered athletes.
