Special Olympics Great Britain athletes Daniel Hudson and Ruben Reuter have both been shortlisted for honours at the 20th Sense Awards, which celebrate the achievements of people with complex disabilities.
Daniel, who is autistic, epileptic and has a learning disability, has been named in the shortlist of three for the Person of the Year Award in recognition of his amazing sporting achievements throughout the year.
Having been part of Special Olympics Sheffield for several years, in June Daniel represented Team Special Olympics GB at the Berlin 2023 Special Olympics World Games, where he won two bronze medals and one silver medal in Tenpin Bowling. He followed that up in August by competing in the Special Olympics Yorkshire & Humberside equestrian event.
Ruben, who has Down Syndrome and is part of Special Olympics Borough of Kirklees club, has been recognised in the Journalism of the Year category for his blossoming career on Channel 4 News.
As a graduate of Special Olympics GB’s Athlete Leadership Programme, one of Ruben’s most celebrated features on Channel 4 News was his interview with Oscar-winning actor and film-maker James Martin, who also has Down Syndrome, where they discussed concerns about disability funding cut.
BAFTA winning actor James Martin was helped into work through a supported work programme that focuses on getting people with learning disabilities into employment.
