Unified Champion Schools
Special Olympics Great Britain delivers the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) programme in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust (YST) and the Lead Inclusion School Network. The programme has seen Special Olympics GB work with YST Lead Inclusion Schools across England to bring together young people with and without intellectual disabilities through sport.
The programme has demonstrated how schools can create teamwork, respect and friendships across ability levels, with UCS now set to grow further across Great Britain.
The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools programme promotes social inclusion through intentionally planned and implemented activities that create system-wide change across education settings. With sport as the foundation, the three-component model offers a unique combination of activities that equip young people with the tools and training to create inclusive sports, classroom and campus environments.
The programme is delivered across schools, colleges and universities, helping to create learning environments where students with intellectual disabilities feel welcome, are routinely included, and feel part of all activities, opportunities and wider student life. This is accomplished by implementing inclusive sports, inclusive youth leadership opportunities, and whole school engagement.
