Special Olympics GB has released a further six sports development plans as part of its long-term strategy to grow and enhance sporting opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities across the country.

Following the previous publication of development plans for basketball, table tennis, badminton and tennis, Special Olympics GB has now launched new plans for developing its offering in alpine skiing, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, swimming, athletics and boccia.

The development plans will see Special Olympics GB bolster its relationships with national governing bodies, and wider sporting networks, to help develop a more inclusive sport sector and more opportunities for people with an intellectual disability.

The plans have been designed to support sustainable growth within each sport and focus on three key priority areas:

  • Strengthening competition pathways
  • Enhancing coach and volunteer development opportunities
  • Building closer relationships with national governing bodies its existing grassroot networks
The development plans will help us create more accessible and meaningful training and competition opportunities for our athletes, whilst also strengthening pathways from grassroots participation through to national and international competition.
By Chris Smith, Head of Sport for Development at Special Olympics GB

“By working closer with National Governing bodies, we’ll help our clubs access better training, resources and support, which will upskill our coaches and ultimately enable our athletes to be the best that they can.”

Further sports development plans are expected to be released throughout the year as Special Olympics GB continues to build long-term growth opportunities across its sports programme.
